Works are underway on multiple transport projects around the Gold Coast, just weeks after federal funding was finally secured.
The Palaszczuk Government is wasting no time getting vital infrastructure projects underway, with works beginning on M1 upgrades and the light rail.
Survey work and prep work is currently starting on two M1 upgrades, one at exit 49 at Pimpama and exit 41 at Yatala South.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey told myGC the state government is hoping to finish the works as quickly as possible.
“M1 motorists will be very happy to hear that survey work and prep work is happening on the exits at Pimpama and Yatala South, exits 49 and 41, after the Palaszczuk Government came to an agreement with the federal government for joint funding.
“There’s nearly 200 million will pour into those interchanges to double their capacity.
“We’ll be trying to get this work done as quickly as we can, so there’s the initial survey works, then there’ll be early works and then we’ll do the full heavy construction.
“So we’ll see three different phases, and we are keen to get them done as quickly as we can.
“These interchanges were built for 25 or 30 years ago, we need to double the capacity through here because of the growth, and that’s what we’re going to do,” Minister Bailey said.
While works have also begun on the light rail extension through to Burleigh Heads, with hi-tech scanners getting installed along the route.
It’s understood the scanners will help engineers improve the design and make any changes before construction begins next year.
Minister Bailey told myGC it’s exciting to finally start work on the project.
“We’re already doing some prep work just a few weeks after the agreement with the federal government on the light rail extension from Broadbeach to Burleigh.
“We’re using the latest technology there, we’re getting on with that as quickly as we can as well.
“It’ll be a three year build but i think it will be worth it, it will be fantastic to see the light rail go all the way to Burleigh,” Minister Bailey said.
